Karl Meltzer's Appalachian Trail Speed Record Attempt

On August 5, Karl Meltzer will attempt to break the venerable Appalachian Trail speed record. He'll have to average 45 miles per day, for 47 straight days. This attempt is highly notable because:

  1. The Trail itself is notable - 2,175 miles!
  2. The AT Record is not soft - its proud
  3. Karl is the fastest ultrarunner to ever try a multi-day record
  4. His attempt will be tracked real-time via GPS

Athlete Training Tips

Nate McDowell: lives in Los Alamos, NM with his wife Petra and their 3-year old daughter Piki. This is an "ultra couple" - Petra is an ex-ski racer, Leader of Moms on Trails in their hometown, and last year won the Wasatch Speedgoat 50 OUTRIGHT. Nate is a fixture on the ultra scene, and former 50 mile Trail National Champion and Wasatch 100 Course Record holder; even their hometown - Los Alamos - seems to breed ultrarunners like Hawaii breeds surfers.
