Caitlin Smith Wins Nike Womens Marathon

10/19, San Francisco, CA

San Francisco, Oct 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Nike Women’s Marathon 2009 took place on the 18th of October, Sunday. Over 20,000 women took part in the race that was held on the streets of San Francisco.

This is the sixth annual installment of the Women’s Marathon. It serves as Nike’s campaign for raising funds for the treatment of those afflicted with leukemia. The objective of the Marathon was to raise the sum of fourteen million dollars for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. The courses for the marathon had remained the same as it has been since 2005. The track started at San Francisco’s Union Square and continued past the Transamerica building, the San Francisco Bay and the Aquatic Park, and came to an end just north of the Great Highway.

The Marathon took place at two levels: the half marathon and the full marathon. In the full marathon, the one to take away the trophy was Caitlin Smith, residing in Oakland, California. The winner for the half marathon was Carrie Dimoff, who came to take part in the race from Portland, Ore.

Caitlin Smith finished the race in two hours, fifty eight minutes and fifty two seconds. Carrie Dimoff ran to victory at one hour, twenty five minutes and twenty six seconds.

Some of the participants felt that running with girls was better than running in a coed race. According to them, there is also a lot of healthy competition. All the participants said that running among San Francisco’s wonderful scenic beauty is a great experience. At the end of the race, Tiffany and Co were seen handing out little gift boxes to the participants containing a silver chain inscribed with ‘run like a girl.’
