Lisa Goldsmith takes 2nd, with Bill Raitter and Bernie Boettcher 5th and 6th. Lisa's Race Report:
Danelle Ballengee and I took it out from the start, with Anita Ortiz right behind. I was able to pull away on the steeps, and went into the woods alone. But on the downhill sections Danelle just strode on by (you know how I luv the down hills :-) Well, not too long after I noticed her struggling down the longest/open powdery section and soon was close enough to see that she was carrying one of her snowshoes! So, feeling very badly for her, I said, "Hang in there, Danelle," and scooted on by. Then on the next hard packed section, out of nowhere comes 'Danelle The Gazelle' cruising up to me, then on by me, still carrying one snow shoe and running in the other. I caught up to her again on a powder section where snowshoes actually are an advantage (!) until finally there was only hard packed trail to go, and gone she was.
Winter in New England
Paul Low writes:
We have been racing on the snowshoes as much as the weather will allow. Thus far, we've had four 'marquee' races; I won three of them but lost in my one head-to-head clash against Rich Bolt at the USSSA national qualifier. Damn. The only medium-big race thus far has been the Jones Town and Country 10 mile, a local road race with big (for a road runner) hills that served as the national champs back in the day. I won it (for the fourth time) on a really windy and cold but sunny day. Coming up, I have this weekend off (although Dave D has a snowshoe race that probably will not go off due to lack of snow) followed by the St. Patty's Day 10k (a huge road race in Holyoke with some nice big hills) and the USSSA nationals in Canada (oops, I mean Northern VT.)
Kelli Lusk adds:
I have to hand it to the snowshoe race organizers.... they've been very creative in finding snowy trails in less than optimal conditions. A couple of guys and I got lost at the last snowshoe race, so had a crappy finish, but still managed to win.
