With less than a mile to go in the La Sportiva/GoLite Castlewood Cliffs 10K Trail Run, barely a step separated Bill Raitter and Ben Marvin. Raitter had placed sixth here in 2005, while Marvin was a newcomer to the La Sportiva/GoLite Front Range Frenzy Trail Running Series.
Halfway into the race, runners climb for nearly a mile to the rim of the canyon for a spectacular run along the edge of Castlewood Cliffs. The final mile climbs through unique boulder formations with a challenging stair-step climb to the race finish.
Despite still feeling weary from the Boston Marathon less than 2 weeks earlier, Marvin managed to use the final climbing mile to pull away to a 16 second margin of victory over Raitter to finish in 44:54. Raitter dropped a minute from his 2005 time to cross the line in 45:10.
In the women's race, it was another newcomer to the series, Boulder's Susan Nuzum, who took the win, finishing in 56:03, with Jennifer Lee of Fort Collins taking second 2 minutes back.
The top-3 overall winners in each of the Front Range Frenzy events take home gift certificates from Boulder Running Company valued at $150, $100, and $50, while also positioning themselves for the Series prize purse totaling $1,800.
The next race in the series is a hill climb up Lookout Mountain in Golden on Saturday July 22nd. Lookout Mountain is a Front Range landmark, and the route climbs 1,900 feet via a 4.5 mile mix of singletrack and wider park trails.
