Kelli Lusk finishes the Machusett Mountain race
 

The first race in the La Sportiva GoLite USATF Mountain Circuit!

Wachusett Mountain was first race in the La Sportiva Golite USATF NE Mountain Circuit.  Paul Low is clearly in top form, and on track for the $500 first prize in the series.

I t was very warm and humid (especially for this early in the year).  I was back and forth with Terry Shea (BAA) the entire run, which made me feel pretty good as he had recently run 2:21 for the marathon. I love the equalizing aspect of mountain running!

There was a problem as Paul smoked the field early, and places 2-5 took a wrong turn shortening the course by about 1/2 mile.  So the winner did not cross the line first!  There was a good race on the ladies side with Kelli finishing 15 seconds behind a BAA marathon ace.

The 14th annual 4.3m run up Mt Wachusett had 275 finishers which was the second largest field ever for the race behind only the 305 finishers of 2002.   This despite temperatures in the upper 70's and low 80's and high humidity.   Paul Low captured his third consecutive title running the 16th fastest time ever on the course and missing the 25 minute barrier by a scant seven seconds.   Low had company in the tough first mile as CMS teammate Kevin Tilton attempted to keep it close on the aptly named Mile Hill road. Low pulled away just before the mile mark and was not challenged further on the 1,900 climb.   The runners in second through fifth took an unintentional short-cut just before the three mile turn (Administration Road) and cut off .55 miles.   As such all four crossed the line ahead of Low.   Although they are unofficial, they will still qualify for Goat status if they complete the series as they ran in good faith and the error was not willfull.

Carly Graytock of the BAA was the women's champion finishing 16 seconds up on Kelli Lusk.   Graytock's time ties Lusk's 2004 time as the 13th fastest ever.   Kathy Maddock of the XC planet team was the top 40+ running 33:56 which was fast enough to place third overall for women.   Her time is the 9thfastest ever for a 40+ woman.   Lisa Doucett running for CSU has five of the top 25 times in the 40+ age group.   She recently moved into the 50+ age bracket and took the women's 50+ age group title with a 39:28.   Her time is the sixth fastest ever for a 50+ woman.   Lauara Beckwith running for CMS was the 60+ champion with a fine 46:21.   Her time is the third fastest ever for a 60+ woman and also ranks in the top 25 for 50+ women.   The three Junior women (under the age of 20) had a close race with Haley Heinrich (age 13) of the Moose Milers taking the win with a 43:41.   Her time is the 14th fastest for a junior.   Kelsie Helberg was close behind in 43:56 with Kasondra Iadarola a minute back.

The Junior men's age group was also a close race with Dan Gentile taking and 18 second win over Sean Doherty (age 10) 35:38 to 35:56.   Both times rank in the top 25 for junior runners.   Dave Dunham (CMS) was the top 40+ finisher, taking 4th place overall in 28:01.   This was Dunham's third consecutive 40+ victory at Wachusett.   His time is the 14th best for a 40+ runner.   One of the closest battles of the day was the men's 50+ age group, with the top six less than a minute apart.   Len Hall (MM&M)   took an 8 second victory over Larry Gentile 32:24 to 32:32.   Bob Hodge, the seven time Mt Washington champion (and former Wachusett winner) took third another four seconds back. Their times all rank in the top 25 for the 50+ age group.   The indomitable Sumner Brown took the 60+ age group with a time that would have placed him 4th in the 50+ category.   Brown, who runs for CSU, won by over three minutes clocking a 32:52.   His time was one second shy of John Pelton's course record.   Rod L'Italien led the 70+ runners with a 44:34 which is the 4th fastest ever for a 70+ runner.   Richard Busa (age 76) and John Noftle (age 79) were the other 70+ runners.   Busa has seven of the top eleven 70+ times and Noftle is the oldest recorded finsher ever at Wachusett mountain.
